·

Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. are in talks with the Justice Department in an effort to head off an antitrust challenge to their proposed advertising agreement.

The settlement negotiations are at an early stage and it isn't clear whether they will resolve U.S. objections or be acceptable to the two companies, lawyers close to the effort said.

At the same time, investigators are continuing to build a lawsuit to block the deal, worried it would give Google too much power in online advertising.

Major advertisers have raised objections to the Google-Yahoo deal, which would align the two largest players in ...

Google Way Back Machine can takes you to January 2001

·

You might have heard about way back machine, which takes you to past to know how things happened at that time. This time Google came with the same concept in honor of its 10th Birthday. Google provided an opportunity to go back to 2001 to see the past. So follow me here I will take you back to January 2001.

Google explains that the index from January 2001 is the earliest available. “Well, for various technical reasons that are too boring to go into, earlier versions of our index aren’t readily accessible. But we did still want to offer users a chance to search an older index as a way of looking back at web history, and the January 2001 index is the best we can do.”

As Wikipedia informs us, January 2001 was an important month: Wikipedia is founded, George W. Bush becomes the 43rd President of the United States and Apple introduces iTunes.
A search for Gmail returned results about a Linux mail client and the Garfield email service.

If you observe you can see a exclamation mark next to Google in logo. Later they removed that mark!
So what you think? Go back to 2001 enjoy searching with your name, your blog name and etc…. Fun Blogging

Happy Birthday Google!

·

This month is the Google’s 10th birthday. Surprised to listen Google will celebrate on the month of September; yes they won’t celebrate on a fixed date. Even I surprised to see on blogs and news sites that varied dates they are posting about Google 10th birthday.
Few words from Google:
Google opened its doors in September 1998. The exact date when we celebrate our birthday has moved around over the years, depending on when people feel like having cake. For more on Google’s history:http://www.google.com/corporate/history.html

Want to know Some fun facts about Google?
Meaning of ‘Google’:
The name ‘Google’ is a play on the word ‘googol,’ coined by Milton Sirotta, nephew of American mathematician Edward Kasner. A ‘googol’ refers to the number represented by the number one followed by 100 zeros. It’s a very large number. In fact, there isn’t a googol of anything in the universe — not stars, not dust particles, not atoms. Google’s use of the term reflects our mission to organize the world’s immense (seemingly infinite) amount of information and make it universally accessible and useful.
Google logo changes:
From time to time we modify the Google logo in honor of holidays celebrated by our users around the world. These special logos - we call them doodles — usually run for 24 hours. You can find an archive of our more popular logo variations at http://www.google.com/holidaylogos.html.

Google Calls for Ideas to Change the World with Project 10^100

·

On the eve of Google’s Birthday, Google decided to do some thing for public and came with an initiation called Project 10^100 (pronounced Project 10 to the 100th), a call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible.
Few words from Google on this event:
We’ve learned over the last ten years at Google that great ideas can come from anywhere. For that reason, Google is announcing as part of its tenth birthday celebration Project 10^100 (pronounced Project 10 to the 100th), a call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible.
For this challenge we are asking our users to send us exciting ideas for ways to improve people’s lives and have committed $10 million to turn up to five of the best ideas into reality. These ideas can be big or small, technology-driven or brilliantly simple - but they need to have impact. We will identify the 100 best ideas and then ask our users to vote on which ideas we should fund. Their votes select the 20 finalists, and then a panel of judges will choose up to five ideas for final funding.
We want to extend to the world the idea that great ideas come from all angles. Google Chrome emerged when engineers realized they needed an entirely new browser to sufficiently engage with rich web applications. Google News began when on 9/11 an engineer became frustrated that he couldn’t aggregate news sources from around the world in one place.
We know there are countless brilliant ideas that need funding and support to come to fruition. What are some examples of ideas we think are cool? A team of just two people are implementing a solution to help the millions of people who laboriously carry on their heads 5-gallon buckets of water for long distances by designing and distributing The Hippo Water Roller (www.hipporoller.org), a relatively inexpensive 24-gallon container that can be easily wheeled on the ground. First Mile Solutions (www.firstmilesolutions.com) is implementing simple but effective ideas for connecting isolated communities in developing countries to the Internet. One plan has communities tacking on Wi-Fi devices to public buses so they can detect and send stored emails and messages as the buses travel through unconnected areas. Google is excited to fund projects that similarly have a big impact.
Google is turning ten years old. What better way to celebrate than by empowering people to help others? May those who help the most win!

·

There's an easy way to upload photos to Picasa Web Albums if you don't want to install Picasa: send your photos by email to a secret address.
First you need visit the Settings page and check "Allow me to upload photos by email." The secret email address where you can send your photos has the following format: username.secretkey@picasaweb.com, where secretkey needs to be defined in the settings.
By default, Picasa Web uploads your photos to the built-in Drop Box albums, but it's a good idea to choose your destination by entering the name of an existing album in the subject of your email.

Make sure you don't share the secret email address with other people, like I did in the screenshot above. And if you do, just choose a different secret key for your address.
You can attach up to 20MB of photos in JPG, GIF and PNG formats, which is a pretty reasonable limitation. Since Picasa Web's mobile site still doesn't support uploading photos, the new option should be really useful when you want to share photos from a phone with email or MMS capabilities.

Google Turns On AdSense For Feeds

·

After more than two months of testing, Google has finally turned on AdSense for Feeds. Formerly, these were FeedBurner ads. The acquired company has moved its advertising program over to Google’s system, and now any AdSense advertiser can tap into the Feedburner network.

The ads are contextual and come in different sizes and formats. Google Operating System, which noticed that the service is now turned on, reports:

"The new AdSense for Feeds option lets you create a new ad unit that has a format automatically selected from 468×60 and 300×250. . . . You can choose if you want image ads, the ad frequency, the position (top or bottom of the post), the colors and a channel that tracks the ad performance."

Hopefully, this will turbocharge ads in feeds, which have not been a stellar performer so far. Does anybody click on those ads? Maybe they should be seen more as branding opportunity, because you certainly see them when you are scrolling through your blog and news feeds.

New Google box for offices can search 10 million files

·

Google Inc said on Tuesday it is an offering an upgraded version of the hardware appliance its sells to companies and government organizations for Google-style Web search of office documents.

The Web search leader said the latest version of the Google Search Appliance, a pizza-sized box that holds a self-contained search system for managing an organization's electronic files, can store up to 10 million documents in a single box.

The new product has the same capacity as a previous version that came in a five-box rack. Google already sells a 12-box version of the appliance in a rack the size of a stand-up refrigerator that can search up to 30 million documents.

The appliances contain Google software to power the search services, running on storage hardware from Dell Inc.

Once installed in a network, the appliances help staff find documents in various different corporate store houses, from EMC Corp's Documentum, IBM's FileNet, Open Text's LiveLink and Microsoft Corp's SharePoint.

New features in the latest model include greater encryption powers and the ability for Google Alerts to notify users when new documents are stored on the network by colleagues.
Network administrators will be able to manage Google Search Appliances in 27 languages, adding Turkish, Czech, Vietnamese and Portuguese. The boxes can, in turn, deliver search results to office workers in 40 different languages.

Mountain View, California-based Google does not disclose revenue for search appliances, which are part of its enterprise software and services business aimed at corporate buyers.

Google offers music search service in China

·

Google has launched a free music search service in China in partnership with a website backed by investors who include basketball star Yao Ming.

The service, launched on a trial basis, allows Chinese Internet users to sample or download licensed music -- for free -- from the database of Beijing-based music website , Google said in a statement.

Chinese Internet users can search for music by the name of the singer, song or album using Google's Chinese website, Google said. The service, which began Tuesday, is not available for users outside China.

The service will provide access to tens of thousands of Chinese songs in Top100.cn, which was co-founded by Yao Ming in 2006 and attracted Google as an investor in 2007, the US company said.

Google, record labels and Top100.cn will share advertising revenue, it said. Google did not give financial details or say what music companies were part of the revenue-sharing agreement.
However, it said the service was a new business model in China that would allow international record labels, which have been plagued by rampant online piracy in the country, to make money from their recordings.

"It provides a sustainable solution for legal downloads of licensed music," Google said.
More than 99 percent of all music files in China are illegal, costing record companies billions of dollars in lost revenue annually, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, a music industry trade body.

When Google Owns You---Must read

·

Nick Saber isn’t happy now. Monday afternoon, after lunch, Nick came back from lunch to find out that he couldn’t get into his Gmail account. Further, he couldn’t get into anything that Google made (beside search) where his account credentials once worked. When attempting to log in, Nick got a single line message:

Sorry, your account has been disabled. [?]

That’s it.
Nick sent a message or three to Google for support. He got back this:

"Thank you for your report. We’ve completed our investigation. Because ourinvestigation was inconclusive, we are unable to return your account atthis time. At Google we take the privacy and security of our users veryseriously. For this reason, we’re unable to reveal any further informationabout this account."

And that’s it.

Suddenly, Nick can’t access his Gmail account, can’t open Google Talk (our office IM app), can’t open Picasa where his family pictures are, can’t use his Google Docs, and oh by the way, he paid for additional storage. So, this is a paying customer with no access to the Google empire.
If he was doing something wrong/illegal/invalid, they might’ve said so (not thinking that he was). If he had been hacked, wouldn’t that be something vaguely apparent? I dunno, but it seems like that’d be the way.

So, what happens now? What does Nick do? He’s sent a bunch of emails. But now what? Locked out of ALL of Google’s apps, the apps that I praise daily, the apps where Julien Smith and I are writing a book. Should we be doing that? I didn’t see a problem until this. What if we’re the next Nick?

What’s your take? And what do you think of hands off customer service in this case?

Comment your feeling here.

**UPDATE: Nick got back in after quite a lot of work.

Google Enterprise Hits 20,000 Customers; Launches Revved Up Search Appliance

·

Google now counts 20,000 enterprise search customers, about a little more than half of whom use its search appliance and the rest of whom use its hosted site search and other enterprise products. To extend it search into the enterprise, Google is launching the fifth generation of its search appliance. Each yellow box, which is based on a standard Dell server, will be able to index 10 million documents, compared to 3 million in the last generation. And it will serve up results two to five times as fast as before, due to both hardware and software improvements.

The Google Search appliance can index pretty much any enterprise data generated by Oracle databases, SAP systems, Documentum, SharePoint, Salesforce.com, HR systems, intranets, wikis, and more, and presents it to employees in a familiar Google-like interface. Two of the new features of the appliance will be:

Personalization: Different employees can see different results based on their role, business or position. For instance, engineers can get design drawings more highly weighted in internal search results than marketing materials. This can be set by both the IT administrator or the employee.

Alerts: Just like Google Alerts, but tied to enterprise data. Triggered by keywords whenever new matches are made and pushed to your e-mail. If you subscribe to “downsizing,” will your boss find out?

Google Expands Trend Tracking With “Insights For Search”

·

Google has just written a blog post introducing “Insights for Search”, an extension to its Google Trends and AdWords products that allows users to track keywords across different verticals, geographic locations, and time periods. According to the post, the new service is designed to help advertisers and marketers get a better understanding for user search behavior. You can access the Insights to Search homepage here (you’ll need to login to your Google account).

Insights for Search bears more than a few similarities to the recently updated Trends site, but with a few additions. The new service allows users to more thoroughly analyze search volume patterns by introducing a number of new filters. Users can now specify what category their search term falls under (for example, you can distinguish between Apple the computer company, or the fruit), and you can generate a heat map detailing where search queries are originating from.
