Google, Yahoo Seek to Avoid Antitrust Suit Over Ad Deal

·

Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. are in talks with the Justice Department in an effort to head off an antitrust challenge to their proposed advertising agreement.

The settlement negotiations are at an early stage and it isn't clear whether they will resolve U.S. objections or be acceptable to the two companies, lawyers close to the effort said.

At the same time, investigators are continuing to build a lawsuit to block the deal, worried it would give Google too much power in online advertising.

Major advertisers have raised objections to the Google-Yahoo deal, which would align the two largest players in ...

Introducing Windows 7

·

Hi there, Mike Nash here.

For me, one of the most exciting times in the release of a new product is right before we show it to the world for the first time. And that time is right now.

In a few weeks we are going to be talking about the details of this release at the PDC and at WinHEC. We will be sharing a pre-beta "developer only release" with attendees of both shows and giving them the first broad in-depth look at what we've been up to. I can't wait for them to see it.

And, as you probably know, since we began development of the next version of the Windows client operating system we have been referring to it by a codename, "Windows 7." But now is a good time to announce that we've decided to officially call the next version of Windows, "Windows 7."

While I know there have been a few cases at Microsoft when the codename of a product was used for the final release, I am pretty sure that this is a first for Windows. You might wonder about the decision.

The decision to use the name Windows 7 is about simplicity. Over the years, we have taken different approaches to naming Windows. We've used version numbers like Windows 3.11, or dates like Windows 98, or "aspirational" monikers like Windows XP or Windows Vista. And since we do not ship new versions of Windows every year, using a date did not make sense. Likewise, coming up with an all-new "aspirational" name does not do justice to what we are trying to achieve, which is to stay firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista, while evolving and refining the substantial investments in platform technology in Windows Vista into the next generation of Windows.

Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore "Windows 7" just makes sense.
We are very excited about the opportunity to tell you more about Windows 7 in the coming weeks, and show you how we have continued to build on investments begun in Windows Vista to deliver on the next release of the Windows operating system.

I look forward to sharing more with you in the coming weeks and months.
--Mike

Google Way Back Machine can takes you to January 2001

·

You might have heard about way back machine, which takes you to past to know how things happened at that time. This time Google came with the same concept in honor of its 10th Birthday. Google provided an opportunity to go back to 2001 to see the past. So follow me here I will take you back to January 2001.

Google explains that the index from January 2001 is the earliest available. “Well, for various technical reasons that are too boring to go into, earlier versions of our index aren’t readily accessible. But we did still want to offer users a chance to search an older index as a way of looking back at web history, and the January 2001 index is the best we can do.”

As Wikipedia informs us, January 2001 was an important month: Wikipedia is founded, George W. Bush becomes the 43rd President of the United States and Apple introduces iTunes.
A search for Gmail returned results about a Linux mail client and the Garfield email service.

If you observe you can see a exclamation mark next to Google in logo. Later they removed that mark!
So what you think? Go back to 2001 enjoy searching with your name, your blog name and etc…. Fun Blogging

Happy Birthday Google!

·

This month is the Google’s 10th birthday. Surprised to listen Google will celebrate on the month of September; yes they won’t celebrate on a fixed date. Even I surprised to see on blogs and news sites that varied dates they are posting about Google 10th birthday.
Few words from Google:
Google opened its doors in September 1998. The exact date when we celebrate our birthday has moved around over the years, depending on when people feel like having cake. For more on Google’s history:http://www.google.com/corporate/history.html

Want to know Some fun facts about Google?
Meaning of ‘Google’:
The name ‘Google’ is a play on the word ‘googol,’ coined by Milton Sirotta, nephew of American mathematician Edward Kasner. A ‘googol’ refers to the number represented by the number one followed by 100 zeros. It’s a very large number. In fact, there isn’t a googol of anything in the universe — not stars, not dust particles, not atoms. Google’s use of the term reflects our mission to organize the world’s immense (seemingly infinite) amount of information and make it universally accessible and useful.
Google logo changes:
From time to time we modify the Google logo in honor of holidays celebrated by our users around the world. These special logos - we call them doodles — usually run for 24 hours. You can find an archive of our more popular logo variations at http://www.google.com/holidaylogos.html.

Google Calls for Ideas to Change the World with Project 10^100

·

On the eve of Google’s Birthday, Google decided to do some thing for public and came with an initiation called Project 10^100 (pronounced Project 10 to the 100th), a call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible.
Few words from Google on this event:
We’ve learned over the last ten years at Google that great ideas can come from anywhere. For that reason, Google is announcing as part of its tenth birthday celebration Project 10^100 (pronounced Project 10 to the 100th), a call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible.
For this challenge we are asking our users to send us exciting ideas for ways to improve people’s lives and have committed $10 million to turn up to five of the best ideas into reality. These ideas can be big or small, technology-driven or brilliantly simple - but they need to have impact. We will identify the 100 best ideas and then ask our users to vote on which ideas we should fund. Their votes select the 20 finalists, and then a panel of judges will choose up to five ideas for final funding.
We want to extend to the world the idea that great ideas come from all angles. Google Chrome emerged when engineers realized they needed an entirely new browser to sufficiently engage with rich web applications. Google News began when on 9/11 an engineer became frustrated that he couldn’t aggregate news sources from around the world in one place.
We know there are countless brilliant ideas that need funding and support to come to fruition. What are some examples of ideas we think are cool? A team of just two people are implementing a solution to help the millions of people who laboriously carry on their heads 5-gallon buckets of water for long distances by designing and distributing The Hippo Water Roller (www.hipporoller.org), a relatively inexpensive 24-gallon container that can be easily wheeled on the ground. First Mile Solutions (www.firstmilesolutions.com) is implementing simple but effective ideas for connecting isolated communities in developing countries to the Internet. One plan has communities tacking on Wi-Fi devices to public buses so they can detect and send stored emails and messages as the buses travel through unconnected areas. Google is excited to fund projects that similarly have a big impact.
Google is turning ten years old. What better way to celebrate than by empowering people to help others? May those who help the most win!

Microsoft may buy Yahoo and AOL if the latter two merge

·

Microsoft is quietly readying a plan to make a purchase of the combined Yahoo-AOL, should Yahoo pull off its plans to acquire the struggling America Online unit, according to sources close to AOL — via the menage-a-trois with AOL.

Microsoft was rebuffed earlier this year when it tried on multiple occasions to buy Yahoo. However, the odds are growing that a chain of events could lead to the Microsoft-Yahoo marriage after all.

Spokespeople at Microsoft and Yahoo declined to comment. A spokeswoman at AOL did not return a phone call and email.

But here’s why it makes sense. Increasingly, word is that Google is going to have trouble upholding its advertising deal with Yahoo, because anti-trust regulators are concerned about the market dominance the deal gives to Google and there’s a very strong chance they’ll reject it. A decision could be made by the Justice Department next week. If that happens, Yahoo’s stock will take a massive hit: One reason Yahoo’s stock is as high as $19 is because of the extra revenues it says it’s getting from the Google deal. Yahoo’s stock could plunge to say, $15, if the Google deal gets rejected. That’s because investors will turn even more bearish on a company that seems strategically adrift.

That would make Yahoo even more desperate to do a deal with another company. While Yahoo’s founder and CEO Jerry Yang has made it clear he does not want to merge with Microsoft, it’s obvious a deal with AOL is more palatable. Indeed, Yahoo’s new board of directors has initiated more talks with Time Warner over a possible merger with its America Online unit, something we confirmed last night. And investor Carl Icahn, now on Yahoo’s board, has been very vocal about Yahoo needing to do a deal. Moreover, AOL appears more desperate than ever to do a deal. Its business has continued to deteriorate. Time Warner said AOL’s ad revenues declined 16 percent to $1.1 billion in the most recent quarter, compared to the same quarter in 2007. So the odds of a Yahoo-AOL deal going through have gone up significantly over the past couple of weeks.
And with Microsoft desperate to do a deal — it wants to compete with Google in online advertising — there’s nothing stopping it from bidding to take over an even more attractive duo of Yahoo-AOL.

Make sure you don't share the secret email address with other people, like I did in the screenshot above. And if you do, just choose a different secret key for your address.
You can attach up to 20MB of photos in JPG, GIF and PNG formats, which is a pretty reasonable limitation. Since Picasa Web's mobile site still doesn't support uploading photos, the new option should be really useful when you want to share photos from a phone with email or MMS capabilities.

Xbox 360 beats PS3 in Japan

·

Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Xbox 360 beat Sony Corp's (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) PlayStation 3 in Japan weekly sales for the first time two weeks ago, riding robust demand for a recent Xbox 360 title produced by Namco Bandai Holdings (7832.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), a magazine publisher said.

Microsoft sold 28,116 units of the Xbox 360 in the week ended August 10, compared with 10,705 units of the PS3, driven by the August 7 launch in Japan of Namco Bandai's "Tales of Vesperia" role-playing game, Ascii Media Works said.

Microsoft, locked in a three-way game console battle with Sony and Nintendo Co Ltd (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), has been struggling to stir up demand for the Xbox 360 in Japan.

During the week, the Microsoft machine still lagged behind Nintendo's Wii, which sold 41,044 units, according to an Ascii Media Works report dated August 14.

The Wii has been leading the global video game console market since its launch in late 2006 thanks to its easy-to-learn motion-sensing controller, low price and innovative software titles such as "Wii Fit" exercise game.

Namco Bandai plans to launch "Tales of Vesperia", an Xbox 360 exclusive, in North America on August 26.

New Web Site Aims to Be Facebook for Sports Fans

·

David Katz is heading into a Web site battle against Internet sports powerhouses like the ones run by ESPN, Yahoo, Fox Sports, Major League Baseball and AOL.

At least he knows the enemy.

By the time Mr. Katz left Yahoo at the end of 2006 as the head of sports, entertainment and studios, he had guided its sports site into a rivalry with espn.com that still has them trading the monthly lead in unique visitors in their category.

Mr. Katz, 36, believes that his Web site, sportsfanlive.com, which will be formally released this week, will find a substantial following with his versions of customized content, social networking and fantasy games. He believes his competitors have grown overly stodgy and too congested for fans to wade through.

“Those other sites are fundamentally all the same,” he said, calling them “imbued with traditional media DNA.” He added that they are “not built for the next generation and for the evolving needs of sports fans.”

Having spent six months mapping out his plan in his Hollywood Hills home, he speaks about the challenge with a confidence that borders on audacity. Central to Mr. Katz’s site are features that flow naturally into one another to create a community that he said would quickly turn viral. And rather than connect to existing social networking sites to jump-start his distribution, Mr. Katz says SportsFanLive will become its own Facebook.

Users will be able to customize the site (like MyESPN or MyYahoo) according to the teams and players they love and hate and will receive a flood of regularly updated news aggregated from 4,500 sources — not the hundreds he said his competitors provided.

“Our secret sauce is aggregation,“ Mr. Katz said. “Google is good for a general search but not at understanding the specific needs of specific people like sports fans.“

Users can easily route articles to like-minded friends on the site through the FanFeed feature. They can also alert buddies to the sports bars they are congregating in to cheer on their teams with the FanFinder application — a ZIP code- and map-based function that is a snappy, visual updating of forums on rivals.com, a Yahoo subsidiary.

“Facebook and other social network sites do a good job of connecting you to people all over your life, but it’s not relevant to your sports interests,“ he said. “We’re isolating that subset of sports friends and giving you instant communication with them.“

He chose not to offer traditional fantasy games, wagering either on fantasy fatigue or in luring fans who lack the time to tend to season-long fantasy games.

Instead, he created a feature in which SportsFanLive’s users can challenge each other by posting or accepting wagers — sort of an online, user-generated casino sports book — that will let them earn (or lose) BuxBets, the site’s version of funny money. “Fans like to test their wits about anything they think they know best,“ he said, in a format that lets them “compete on any topic they want, against anyone at any time.“

Jeff Price, the president for digital of the Sports Illustrated Group, said, “David understands what sports fans want, but can he sustain traffic and engagement? Sports fans will vote with their mouse.”
