In Mumbai, Bloggers and Twitter Offer Help to Relatives

Bloggers pitched in offering information and other help to people worldwide as Indian police and commandos battled it out Thursday with armed terrorists in two top hotels and a residential complex in south Mumbai.
On "Mumbai Help", bloggers offered to help users get through to their family and friends in the city, or to get information on them.
Mobile and fixed line circuits to Mumbai were clogged by the large number of people trying to get in touch with people in Mumbai after the crisis. A significant number of the people trapped in the hotels are foreigners, according to media reports.
More people are likely to use mobile phones and technologies like SMS (Short Message Service) to get in touch with relatives than go online, because the number of mobile users outstrips that of online users in Mumbai. But when the phone lines are clogged, some people are realizing that going online may be a good alternative.
People posting on the Mumbai Help blog included a sister trying to get in touch with her brother on a mobile number. A volunteer tried the number, and promptly reported on the blog that the number was busy but she would continue to try.

Google, Yahoo Seek to Avoid Antitrust Suit Over Ad Deal

Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. are in talks with the Justice Department in an effort to head off an antitrust challenge to their proposed advertising agreement.
The settlement negotiations are at an early stage and it isn't clear whether they will resolve U.S. objections or be acceptable to the two companies, lawyers close to the effort said.
At the same time, investigators are continuing to build a lawsuit to block the deal, worried it would give Google too much power in online advertising.

Introducing Windows 7

Hi there, Mike Nash here.
For me, one of the most exciting times in the release of a new product is right before we show it to the world for the first time. And that time is right now.
In a few weeks we are going to be talking about the details of this release at the PDC and at WinHEC. We will be sharing a pre-beta "developer only release" with attendees of both shows and giving them the first broad in-depth look at what we've been up to. I can't wait for them to see it.
And, as you probably know, since we began development of the next version of the Windows client operating system we have been referring to it by a codename, "Windows 7." But now is a good time to announce that we've decided to officially call the next version of Windows, "Windows 7."
While I know there have been a few cases at Microsoft when the codename of a product was used for the final release, I am pretty sure that this is a first for Windows. You might wonder about the decision.
The decision to use the name Windows 7 is about simplicity. Over the years, we have taken different approaches to naming Windows. We've used version numbers like Windows 3.11, or dates like Windows 98, or "aspirational" monikers like Windows XP or Windows Vista. And since we do not ship new versions of Windows every year, using a date did not make sense. Likewise, coming up with an all-new "aspirational" name does not do justice to what we are trying to achieve, which is to stay firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista, while evolving and refining the substantial investments in platform technology in Windows Vista into the next generation of Windows.
Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore "Windows 7" just makes sense.
We are very excited about the opportunity to tell you more about Windows 7 in the coming weeks, and show you how we have continued to build on investments begun in Windows Vista to deliver on the next release of the Windows operating system.
I look forward to sharing more with you in the coming weeks and months.

Hitwise Says Growth of Social Networking Sites is Slowing

Facebook is the second most popular website in UK after Google but closely followed by Windows Live Hotmail and eBay.
Now a r report published in Hitwise UK says that Facebook continues to grow in UK but the rate of growth has slowed and the average time that people spend on Facebook too has flattened out.
Traffic to the site increased by 4% between August and September this year, down from 50% over the same period last year.
The average session time has declined at MySpace & Bebo while remaining still at around 20 minutes on Facebook.

How To:Take Screen Capture

You might know the importance of screen capture. One of the regular tasks we do as a Blogger is taking the photos of screens to explain our reader very clearly. Providing a relevant picture in your article catches the eye of readers. For taking this you don’t need to buy or download any special software. Just a couple keys in your keyboard will do this for you. Here is how to for different Operating Systems:
Windows System: If you are using Windows just hit your Print Screen key. This copies the screen and places it in your clipboard. Now open any image editor (Run->Mspaint) and click Edit - Paste. Save this new image in any format you want.
In order to capture only the active window (the window that has the focus), hit ALT + Print Screen.
You can use any image editor like Mspaint, Adobe PhotoShop, Paint Shop Pro, Fireworks.
Macintosh System: On a Mac hit Apple + Shift + 3.
Linux System:Linux systems usually come with a free screen capture utility. For example, you can find one under the KDE desktop.

Take Backup of your Feeds

I came across this problem today. Unfortunately I lost all the feeds from IE7 and now I didn’t remember all those useful sites. So I thought its worth to share with all the blogging people to avoid them to face the same issue.
Make sure to take Backup once in month at least. Here is the process how
- Click on the Add button (the star and plus button next to the Favorites Center button — Alt-Z is the keyboard shortcut).
- Click on Import and Export in the menu.
- In the wizard, select Export Feeds from the list of options and click next.
- Select where you’d like the file to be put (by default, it’s called feeds.opml, in your Documents folder)
- Finish up the wizard.

Google Way Back Machine can takes you to January 2001

You might have heard about way back machine, which takes you to past to know how things happened at that time. This time Google came with the same concept in honor of its 10th Birthday. Google provided an opportunity to go back to 2001 to see the past. So follow me here I will take you back to January 2001.
Google explains that the index from January 2001 is the earliest available. “Well, for various technical reasons that are too boring to go into, earlier versions of our index aren’t readily accessible. But we did still want to offer users a chance to search an older index as a way of looking back at web history, and the January 2001 index is the best we can do.”
As Wikipedia informs us, January 2001 was an important month: Wikipedia is founded, George W. Bush becomes the 43rd President of the United States and Apple introduces iTunes.
A search for Gmail returned results about a Linux mail client and the Garfield email service.
If you observe you can see a exclamation mark next to Google in logo. Later they removed that mark!

AOL Launches New Website called Digital City

AOL launched yet another website called Digital City. It looks like normal WordPress blog like yours and mine. Style of maintenance also same they will post articles daily covering news and trends in entertainment, concerts, nightlife and dining.

On the eve of Google’s Birthday, Google decided to do some thing for public and came with an initiation called Project 10^100 (pronounced Project 10 to the 100th), a call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible.

We’ve learned over the last ten years at Google that great ideas can come from anywhere. For that reason, Google is announcing as part of its tenth birthday celebration Project 10^100 (pronounced Project 10 to the 100th), a call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible.
For this challenge we are asking our users to send us exciting ideas for ways to improve people’s lives and have committed $10 million to turn up to five of the best ideas into reality. These ideas can be big or small, technology-driven or brilliantly simple - but they need to have impact. We will identify the 100 best ideas and then ask our users to vote on which ideas we should fund. Their votes select the 20 finalists, and then a panel of judges will choose up to five ideas for final funding.
We want to extend to the world the idea that great ideas come from all angles. Google Chrome emerged when engineers realized they needed an entirely new browser to sufficiently engage with rich web applications. Google News began when on 9/11 an engineer became frustrated that he couldn’t aggregate news sources from around the world in one place.
